Let’s be honest—our revolution is here

Aug 11, 2011 | Volume 64 Issue 4 | No comments

I basically stopped following the news after the last election — most of it’s terrible anyway. Still, major events hit my radar and all things considered, it looks like the day student loans are wiped off the books is within sight, now that the revolution is spreading.

Protest politely, please

Last May the ship Mavi Marmara (carrying aid to the citizens of Gaza) was attacked by the Israeli navy in international waters, resulting in deaths and serious injuries. On March 29, Kevin Neish, who was aboard the Mavi Marmara, presented live video footage taken during the attack.

Vikes eliminated

Vikes guard Debbie Yeboah led all scorers with 24 points enroute to the 83-73 loss to the University of Regina Cougars on March 11. The loss ousted the Vikes from the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) Western Regional Tournament and ended UVic’s post-season.

Campus-wide food card already in the works

As a current UVic Students’ Society (UVSS) director-at-large, I was surprised to see the Renew slate promising a campus-wide food card that would include the Student Union Building. I was surprised because Dylan Sherlock, another current director-at-large, has, in working with UVSS management, already secured this for implementation at the end of next year.

Skankster’s paradise lost

I regret the removal of “Skankster’s Paradise” from CFUV. It was one of the only places to listen to local ska talent. It is my understanding the show was removed from the airwaves due to an incident stemming from the complaint of a listener and how this was handled on-air.

Don’t cross me outside of the crosswalk

What’s with UVic students who think they are invincible? Just because you go to university does not make you smart. If you step out onto the road nowhere near a crosswalk, seven to 10 feet in front of a moving two-ton vehicle doing 40 km/h, be thankful that I have fast reflexes and am able to stop in time. Don’t flip me the bird; today was your lucky day and you should call your mom.

Smokers not all “bad-ass”

Re: “Studying, not smoking,” Jan. 13

I have been an on-and-off smoker since age 15. As you age, the smoking image becomes less alluring, but the gross smell, hacking cough and fading bank account start to kick in, and all you want to do is stop smoking! But you try eight times and still no luck. Your nicotine levels are down. You walk outside the library, but it’s Victoria, so rain soaks your face and cigarette. You stand under the overhang to light up, not realizing there are air vents above you. Then you walk over to the bucket saying “butt out here” and kindly put your butt in the appropriate place.

UVic’s rabbit statement: suspect and nonsensical

UVic Communications’ recent statement that approximately 750 rabbits had been handed over to various sanctuaries is enlightening. It also said that predators and birds of prey had accounted for the diminishing numbers. At the outset of the rabbit problem, UVic claimed there were about 2,000 rabbits on campus. If 750 went to homes, are they saying that another 1,250 were decimated by predators? Was that 2,000 number just UVic spin to justify trapping or were some of the so-called predators two-legged ones? The plot thickens.

Photo radar a proven failure

Photo radar didn’t work: don’t even think about bringing it back. Plenty of things other than speed can cause accidents, like texting drivers, inexperienced drivers and drunk drivers.

Time for change

1988. Wayne Gretzky was traded to the Los Angeles Kings. The Winter Olympics were held in Calgary. Microsoft released Windows 2.1. The UVic Students’ Society (UVSS) got its last operation fund increase.

No respect for vets’ efforts

Apart from the obvious humanitarian and ethical considerations, I would like to remind the person who ordered the shooting of many rescued bunnies from the sanctuary in Coombs that her action shows no respect for the many hours of work numerous compassionate vets donated in their spare time or even on weekends to spay or neuter those rabbits. It can take one hour to sterilize one female, so one can easily figure out the total hours vets devoted to this that have now been wasted.
