A sad rerun nobody wants to see

When I read that the Liberals were pushing this country toward another federal election my first thought was: “didn’t we just do that?”

Canada’s current political leaders, in a word, suck. They have stopped acting like people that actually want to accomplish something and instead are acting like kindergartners arguing over whose turn it is with the ball, completely ignoring the fact that they’re wearing out the teacher with their screaming. The truly sad thing is that it’s not Parliament that is the teacher here.

I think I speak for the 59 per cent of people who bothered to vote in the last election when I say to Ottawa: “It costs over $200 million to run a federal election, thousands of people are out of work and you guys (most of whom are lawyers, economists and generally people who say that they know more than the sad, ill-informed Gen-Yers who can’t be trusted with pencils) can’t seem to find a way of working together to sort this mess out without costing us more money?”

But, really, there’s no interest in actually doing what is best for the country here — there’s just a group of conflicting agendas.

The Liberals are trying to take advantage of the economic situation to recreate their 1993 march to triumph under Chretien; the Bloc just wants to try and show Quebecers that the federal parties squabble too much to have Quebec’s interests at heart; Harper’s Conservatives are going to try and paint the opposition parties as irresponsible in an attempt to form a national consensus outside of the West; and the NDP will typically do what all people do when facing a fight between two heavy weights who want to grab the scrappy underdog for help — they’ll take the side that offers the most.

Again, doesn’t this sound like another bad rerun of some lame soap opera? Well, to the uninitiated, that is what politics in this country has become.
