UVic’s Anti-Violence Project (AVP) is hosting a film series in hopes of creating a place where people can talk about how violence impacts lives and to show how powerful creative resistance can be.

“We decided to host the film series as a way to connect the work we do with broader social issues ‑ so often we work in isolation on single campaigns and do not have opportunity to come together, connect and challenge our own assumptions,” said Liz Morrison, a co-ordinator with AVP.

The series, “Defy, Revive, Remember,” will include a screening of Precious at 7 p.m. on Feb. 26, For the Next 7 Generations at 7 p.m. on March 2 and Polytechnique at 7:15 p.m. on April 6. All of the screenings will take place in Cinecenta.

The films will be followed by discussions and speakers in the Student Union Building’s (SUB) upper lounge. Refreshments will be provided by AVP.

“Each film highlights different ways that violence impacts our society,” said Morrison. “We also wanted to emphasize that within stories of violence and oppression, there are always narratives of hope, resistance and renewal.”
