Five spring fashion trends to ring in the new year
As 2009 sets in and we stop accidentally writing 2008 on everything, we are left to wonder what to expect from the upcoming months.
Fashion-wise, will trucker hats come back to re-haunt us? Will our hangers struggle to hold on to off-the-shoulder sweaters? Unlike those trends that follow us like a piece of toilet paper stuck to the bottom of our shoe, some 2008 items are welcome friends in the new year. Of course, there are also some new finds that give us all hope that 2009 will be a great year in fashion. Here are five trends to already love this year, whether they’re new, returning, or still going strong.
Dyed leather gloves
Not only are they practical as our winters get colder and longer, but they are a great splash of colour to any outfit. These gloves work best as the center of attention, so pairing them with black or grey is ideal. Half-gloves are also fun, with full fingers, but stopping halfway into the palms. Some stores even market vegan-friendly versions.
The large geek-chic glasses
These bold pairs of eyewear make short-sightedness more fun. If you have to wear glasses, you may as well make a statement with them. They were around last year, but now they’re becoming an accessory of high fashion.
Ankle boots
While campus was invaded last year by the high boot, this spring you can look forward to shorter tops, with taller heels. Beautifully detailed, these boots look great with cable knit tights and skirts, or skinny jeans. Beware however — they can make your legs look shorter, so choose your outfit wisely.
Monochromatic outfits
It is almost like wearing a uniform or dressing up as a colour for Halloween. Surprisingly, it looks amazing (most of the time), and is popping up all over the place right now. Be careful though — even the most optimistic person would have trouble pulling off an all-yellow ensemble.
Pleats, pleats, pleats
They are not only flattering, but they give movement to your outfit and add a look of effort to whatever you’re wearing. But if you don’t know the difference between pleats and wrinkle creases, avoid this look — and maybe buy an iron.
This year seems to be about variety and softness. While patterns are still present, intricate design in simpler fabrics seem to dominate the look. That said, there is still plenty of room for individuality and a unique spin on the season.
