UVic’s 2009 graduating class will be leaving the university community $12,000 richer thanks to this year’s grad legacy project. The money, which is part of the more than $30,000 budget allocated for grad year activities, is being spent on a variety of projects around the university.

“We wanted to give something that wasn’t just temporary,” said Executive Chris Anctil of the grad class committee.

From the money being donated this year, $4,000 is being spent on new furniture for Vertigo, $2,500 for next year’s Student Union Building (SUB) party, $1,000 for new music stands and $1,000 is being set aside for art for the new First Peoples’ house, with a preference being given to art from UVic students.

The committee also decided to give $3,000 to the UVic Students’ Society food bank for a new freezer, shelving and food while the remaining $500 will go to charity.

While the amount donated was slightly above average when compared to previous grad classes, the committee was frustrated with the small number of proposals from students.

“We were somewhat disappointed in the number of people that submitted a proposal,” said Executive Chair Randy Neville, adding the committee received fewer than 20 proposals for what to do with the money. “The lack of proposals and people really limited what we could do.”

The committee, which is also responsible for planning the grad party, was further hindered by the SUB strike earlier this year, which meant that much of the planning didn’t begin until January. For next year’s class, executive members hope that more graduating students become

involved.

“It’s a great opportunity to get involved because you actually have the resources to get things done,” said Anctil.

The budget is derived from a combination of graduation fees and donations, and the majority of the money that is not donated is spent on the grad party.

Previous grad classes have donated money toward, among other things, improved seating in the SUB, televisions in Felicita’s, the UVSS Food bank and various other charities.

Wait. $3000 for a freezer? Isn't that a little steep? and why are we funding the SUB Party? The UVSS charges a ton for that stupid thing and it's always lame. What charity did we give $500 to? $1000 for music stands? For what? wtf? Some legacy.

I heard about this project but didn't fully understand what it was about, having not been around UVic for very long. I'm sure more clear publicity would bring in more proposals.

    For some clarification:

The sentence reads The committee also decided to give $3,000 to the UVic Students’ Society food bank for a new freezer, shelving and food...

Hence, for all three items it is $3000. More specifically, it's $1000 for each of the three items.

If there are art submissions put forward, the $1000 in art is for the SUB and it is suppose to be from graduating students.

and why are we funding the SUB Party? The UVSS charges a ton for that stupid thing and it's always lame.

I would say you are on the right track, just finish it off with: No money=lameness; More money=bigger band =less lameness.

    $1000 for music stands

There is a volunteer music group on campus that is for students who are not music majors. There are quite a few students involved from a wide spectrum of departments and programs. They have to bring their own equipment (stands). I was actually surprised to gets a thanks from a chemistry student today for music stands.

I'm sure more clear publicity would bring in more proposals. I agree in some regards. The amount of publicity we as students can get is limited. If you check the Martlet in previous weeks, we had asked for submissions. And, posters were up around campus. If people had inquiries, our email address was listed. It is in my suggests for next year to find a better method of getting the information out there but this kind of project does not get the word-of-mouth that the Grad Party gets.

As for For what? wtf? Some legacy. I thinks thats a reflection of your support and involvement.

Your in I thinks thats a reflection of your support and involvement was meant to be applied more generally, to say a reflection of student involvement.

I tried to empathize this to Scott with “The lack of proposals and PEOPLE(!) really limited what we could do.”

If you really want to have an amazing party, cool events, a campus that really understands what student's want, get involved! Join these committees! They are not held at midnight in dark alleys. The only thing stopping you from getting involved is you.

For those that know me or those that remember that I ran against the current UVSS board in a previous election, will know i'm not a fan of how thing are done. But, what we do agree at least one thing: if you want to make things better and want them to recognize your P.O.V., you need to get involved. Don't leave it to the same people every year to do things on your behalf and expect things to change. Contact the UVSS and they will tell you when/where meetings are for different committees.
