The Martlet

Guerrillas, pigs, bunnies, oh my

The textbooks have closed on another year at UVic, and debate has been the lesson.

But whether the topic was abortion, bunnies, student politics, or gardens, the only thing groups on this campus seem to be able to agree upon is that it’s hard to agree.

Here’s a recap of some of the top 10 blockbuster news stories to grace the pages of the Martlet this past year. And while we’ve all had our take on the matters at hand, we at the paper want to commend you for being interested, and being involved. Because, when it comes down to it, you can’t create change without care. So, good job, UVic.

  1. September brought up the stinky subject of sewage in Victoria, focusing particularly on where the Capital Region District should place a new sewage treatment centre. Would it be on campus? Off campus? The city is still waiting with baited breath.

  2. Fears of H1N1 (lovingly known as swine flu) broke out early in the fall, causing the buildings around campus to stock up on paper towels and hand sanitizer. The health clinic told students to just stay home if they were feeling ill, and doctor’s notes became optional — about time.

  3. Reforming the UVic Students’ Society (UVSS) had some students excited to see change — especially after an ad hoc committee agreed to electoral reform. But new policies weren’t passed until this spring, meaning elections were run under the same old rules for the last time this year. Thank you, change.

  4. Students were bombarded with petitions this fall. Should we leave the Canadian Federation of Students (CFS)? Should we stay? Do we even know what it is? In the end, the CFS said the petition requesting a referendum didn’t have enough signatures, and they refused to approve a referendum. Seems fishy.

  5. Pro-life group Youth Protecting Youth (YPY) revved up controversy this past year — especially when their funding was continually denied and their club status was revoked. Some argued that YPY’s methods constituted as harassment, while YPY argued that they were being censored. All depends on your side, we guess.

  6. After years of lobbying, Victoria finally got late-night transit with a three-month pilot project that began in January and extended service on three bus routes for Friday and Saturday nights. B.C. Transit will assess the results of the project and determine whether or not late-night transit should continue. Let’s hope they heard what those packed buses were saying.

  7. The UVSS saw a number of issues policies crop up this year, including one that forced the students’ society to take a stance on fraternities and sororities. That board meeting was one of the best attended of the year, complete with people bringing popcorn to watch. In the end, the UVSS would not endorse such housing — but they wouldn’t be cutting them out either. Oh, democracy.

  8. This spring’s student elections saw an Obama-like mania, as students flocked to the polls to beat out the current regime: Team Fast (cleverly renamed Students United). But the massive win for the RENEW slate had students feeling uneasy about voting in another majority board. What will come of this? Only time will tell.

  9. Bunnies became the topic of conversation (more than usual) late this term, as UVic’s pilot project for rabbit removal failed. The lagomorphs were released back onto campus, with talk of an upcoming spay-and-neuter operation or mass cull haunting the holes of our favourite furry friends. Here’s hoping they’re building up their barracks.

  10. Perhaps the most newsworthy event to happen on campus in recent history came in the form of a resistance group plowing forward with their plans to plant seeds in UVic’s lawns. The guerrilla gardeners of the Food Not Lawns Collective (FNLC) cropped up a plot by the McPherson Library, only to have it torn down by UVic administration. Not to be outdone, they planted it again. We’ll all be watching as the story unfolds. We give them kudos, though, for having the courage to dig headfirst into change.

I'd have to agree there is some suspect analysis going on.

But the massive win for the RENEW slate had students feeling uneasy about voting in another majority board.

where did you collect this opinion? This certainly wasn't a popular sentiment around campus. do you mean to say one or two students expressed unease about another majority? honestly, i think you know as well as I do that students don't look at the UVSS through the lens of majority/minority governments.

The Obama suggestion is just bizarre. Renew represented the more right-wing slate of the two major slates. what was Obama like about BC Libs and Fed Libs joining together to end a decade of progressive student government?

i don't know if Kailey wrote this one or not, but i agree it has the touch of her kind of work.

i know a few people on Students United and they had no connection to Team Fast (the more left-wing slate from the year before). Veronica, Heather, and Leah Staples were the only three people running who had that connection i think. I'm not sure how it's fair to assume that even though the majority of the slate is a new crop of students they some how have to wear all the perceived mistakes of an entirely different crop of students from the year before. The suggestion that they were the same was an attack line crafted by team renew/work and their journalist agents like David Foster. Kailey would be the kind of journalist to inject the partisan cleverly renamed far reaching anecdote in there. If it's not her it's someone else on the Martlet staff eating up the products of the Liberal Party propaganda machine.

In the end, the CFS said the petition requesting a referendum didn’t have enough signatures, and they refused to approve a referendum. Seems fishy.

ya something smells fishy alright, but i'd say it has more to do with one sided Martlet editorials than the CFS.

simple question: will the Martlet be a transparent and accountable news source by owning up to the individuals behind this particular editorial?

I know editorials are often voted on by the collective board, but usually the writing is left to one or two people. who actually wrote this editorial?

Could you equate Renew's win to Obama-mania? Maybe not.

But, we are seeing one parallel here: Students United supporters whining about media bias like a bunch of Republicans.

STUDENTS UNITED LOST! Get over it and stop whining! There is so much more that goes on at UVic besides the UVSS elections, as evidenced by the fact that it took up 1/10 stories in this post.

And to say that the link with FAST was vague at best, considering one of their candidates, Caitlyn Pal, came to my class and stated that they used to be Team Fast.

Liberal, Conservative or NDP a student politician is a student politician, not the Pope.

    @ Jess

You know why many people make the conclusion that Students United was a rebranded Team FAST? Because even the new members of the slate campaigned on Team FAST's record. Many of the new candidates could be heard during the campaign telling students We got you late night transit among other accomplishments of this new slate. Students United wants to have it both ways.

It should also be noted that the UVSS has worked towards late night transit since 2004 (http://www.uvss.uvic.ca/upload/docs/meetings,%20agendas,%20minutes/minutes%202004-12-07.pdf). It has been an effort of multiple boards, not just the work of the current board.

ps. Are these baseless accusations of bias and Liberal conspiracy going to continue all year? Funny how noone brought up a NDP conspiracy while it's members have been running the board the past couple years.

Renew recruited their cynical friends to run a negative subversive campaign that spun half truths and lies about the current board, while Renew polluted the campus with branded stickers by advertising them as repellent to any future canvassers. hmm.

So, as one of Renew's volunteers this past election, I'm one of those cynical friends you speak of. So, please, entertain me: what half-truths did I tell? What negative, subsersive things did I or others say?

If you're going to say stuff like that, back it up.

If you idiots really want answers to these questions how about you email the editor in chief or physically walk into their office in the SUB?

Oh that's right, because then you couldn't hide behind some anonymous name on the internet.

hey Andrew, whats this sotry of liberal conspiracy you mentioned? i haven't heard it. i know lots of Renewers were young libs but i have not heard much beyond this. i havent seen it in the martlet yet.

i heard some ndp conspiracy a couple years ago because the chair person was also a ndp voter or member or something. i asked my friedn in the ndp party and they said it did not make any sense because most of the board wasnt ndp. i have also heard it that the team united was ndp, but i asked them and they said they were a mix of progressives. only a couple were ndp members. it's good to know about these things because i can vote on the persons values.

@ andrew not sure how that references a conspiracy. I was simply drawing on the connection between the young liberals and team renew. Liberals dominated Renew and had party members helping out behind the scenes as well. The Martlet is very generous toward covering these students in favorable light and carrying stories they are pushing. This is not to say there is some conspiracy at work, it's just stating the fact that there are conflicts of interest present and journalism standards not being upheld.

I think what is being said by a lot of people is Martlet decision makers look to be a lot more comfortable with their journalists being personally involved in the stories than most other newspapers. It's a student paper, so I get that it's more relaxed. some integrity and respect for independent journalism would be nice though. the first step would be to assign new writers to a lot of these stories.

Also, only one known NDP member ran against Renew. hardly a double standard at work here. irregardless, party membership in student politics is not the problem. the point is students should be made aware when there is a heavy load of partisan interests at work and should be made aware of the values their reps hold.

I'm going to agree. If you are in a political party and want to run for student politics then that's great, but i wanna know about it.

If these Liberals are spending their personal time campaigning with Ignatief to expand the oil sands and then coming on campus and preaching about a sustainable campus (like all candidates seemed to be doing in the last election) then i wanna know what's going on behind the curtain.

Jess when your post says the Martlet is under the influence of Liberal propaganda, that sounds a lot like implying a conspiracy to me.

Yes, five members of Renew happen to be Liberals. So what? The Martlet often gives fairly favourable coverage to winning sides before they begin their term in office. It's hard to be critical of a slate before they've even done anything. I'm not really aware of the evidence that new writers need to be assigned to cover these stories.

Even if only one official NDP member ran for Students United, evidence of more members actively supporting the party have been posted in previous article comments. After past UVSS election results there was never this kind of scrutiny of party memberships. It is only because it is the wrong party that some people are making an issue of it.

I'll direct to the following editorial and corresponding comments instead of rehashing this whole debate here: http://martlet.ca/article/21173-partisanship-is-a-fact-of

I would just like to point out that of the four executives only ONE is a liberal member. The Chair candidate is a BC green member and the other two don't have any party affiliation.

Students United had just as many NDP members as Renew had Liberal members, including at least two on the executive.

But here is the real kicker... no one cares! Honestly, they have not taken office yet. Why not see how they do, and comment on that rather than on party affiliations?

If you are worried about candidates that preach sustainability then do otherwise then you should be complaining about the past three years of Team FAST led boards. Team FAST did an excellent job of greenwashing. A bunch of their board members over the years never practiced what they preached and continued to drive to campus regularly. Despite three elections of promoting sustainability as a top priority what do they really have to show for it? No wonder they had to re-brand as Students United this year. I'm glad students weren't fooled again.

It's always nice to be told which side I'm supporting, but it seems some of these critics aren't carefully reading what I write. I voted for some Renew candidates, but not all of them. I also voted for members of two other slates, and two independents. For the record this is actually what I wrote during the election:

This year Renew is using bright green posters, once again capitalizing on the environmentalist vote. Like Students United, their sustainability initiatives would be small improvements but wouldn't make a lot of difference to anything.

Renew also suffers from some of the same problems as Students United, notably a focus on lobbying for late night public transit and off-campus housing.
