Students lose clothes for cancer

Students wearing only their skivvies — and a few in outlandish costumes — jogged around Ring Road last Friday, Sept. 26, to show their support for the fight against breast cancer.

The UVic Undie Run, an event started by third-year humanities student Hugh Wallace in 2005, had its third annual iteration in support of the BC Cancer Foundation, raising $280 for the cause.

“It’s my favourite [event] of the year,” remarked UVic student Craig Stout. “We’re raising money for a good cause.”

This year, the Undie Run had no corporate or club sponsorship, and attendance suffered as a result. Most students found out about the Undie Run through word of mouth, with only a few days notice prior to the event.

“Last year, we had 90 [participants],” said Wallace, “this year, I expected 40.”

The event had a turnout of 70 participants.

In the past, the Undie Run has been sponsored by supporters such as The Love Stop, an infamous erotica shop, whose free prizes and handouts had helped to spark student interest.

The Undie Run would usually be sponsored in part by a club, with tickets being sold for $10 and donations reaching upwards of $1,100. This year, donations were up to the discretion of runners.

Wallace said that the problem with sponsorship was that it came with a lack of control.

“There [were] a lot of great people in the UVSS last year who gave me a lot of freedom ... but some people tried to take it over,” Wallace said.

Despite the setbacks, dozens of students showed up for this year’s Undie Run, and for a variety of reasons.

“It allows me to be an exhibionist without being judged,” joked second-year education student Andrea James.

Second-year student Andrew Johnson is a returning participant.

“It was an enjoyment last year, and what a way to celebrate the ‘new’ year,” he said.

Wallace managed this year’s obstacles in stride. His plans for next year include a larger organization party, more notice for participating students and examining further possibilities of club and corporate sponsorships.

Student’s interested in assisting Wallace with the event in the coming years should join the “UVic Undie Run” Face-

book group.
