OTTAWA (CUP) -- With campus safety becoming an increasingly serious issue, some universities are setting up a new system of notifying students during an emergency: text messages.

While some may be leery about possible privacy issues, this system would be invaluable in a crisis.

If a student on the bus gets a text message on their cell phone saying there’s an emergency on campus, the student can act accordingly. Universities could also eliminate confusion by maintaining communication and preventing the spread of rumours, which only contribute to the worry and panic.

It would also be more reliable than e-mail since getting to a computer isn’t as easy as reaching into your pocket. While questions still loom about its effectiveness, universities should embrace text messaging as a proactive measure that can enhance safety and security giving students some peace of mind.
