April 3, 1963 — Martlet news editor Terry Matte leveled the most fiery condemnation of the paper ever in his resignation letter to the editor-in-chief. Matte said that the paper was pervaded by student immaturity and depravity and has become known for its indecency and obscenity. Matte also called out the editorial policy as a confused mish-mash of conflicting ideas, citing the editor-in-chief’s decision to praise the student council one week, and attack them scathingly the next. Citing constant attacks and aspersions from the likes of the Times Colonist, the Oak Bay Leader and the Centurion, Matte ended his resignation letter by refusing to be the “bumboy” for such a backwater excuse for journalism. Publication of the paper was then discontinued until September.

April 5, 1984 — A UVic study found that the university was worth big bucks to the local economy, with students alone spending nearly $26 million in the community in 1983. Of the $55 million the university paid in salary and expenses to staff, nearly 75 per cent was spent locally, said analyst Charlie Gallagher. The university also spent $15 million at local firms on capital and operating expenses, while booking records showed that visitors spent in excess of $5 million during conferences and meetings held at UVic. The report concluded UVic created the second highest proportion of Victoria’s 80,000 jobs.

April 4, 2002 — Kent Glowinski, a UVic law student, said he would take a dispute over the handling of his parking ticket dispute to the B.C. Supreme Court over what he alleged as an issue of fairness. Glowinski maintained that because Campus Security forces students to pony up for their ticket up front whether they want to appeal or not, the appeal system presumes guilt and doesn’t allow complainants to fairly discuss the merits of an appeal.

I find the parking ticket case to be interesting, because there was a recent ruling on a similar matter yesterday against UBC. http://www.vancouversun.com/travel/Judge%20rules%20parking%20tickets%20invalid/1451135/story.html

Makes me wonder if our students should receive compensation for all the times Campus Security towed student's cars.

Guess he was ahead of his time!

Didn't the BC Supreme Court say something about it not being fair to have to pay before you appeal in that recent decision against UBC?
