Thoughts from our UVSS chairperson

Caitlin Meggs is the chairperson of the UVSS.

Last week, independent UVic Students’ Society board member Ahmed Mumeni wrote a heated column in the Martlet smearing the current UVSS board.

Ahmed’s words surprised me. First, his tactic to engage students was counter-intuitive. More students are disenfranchised when they hear nothing but negativity.

Second, Ahmed fails to take responsibility for addressing any of the problems he saw. Maybe instead of being critical he should take more time to get involved. There are endless opportunities to make positive change.

Take Geordon Omand, who spearheaded making a Student Union Building Operations Committee and has been tirelessly chairing and seeking input into how to improve the SUB. Or take Stafford Richeter, who organized a food security movie viewing called “Island on the Edge.”

These are just two examples of how any student can get involved. I am ashamed that Ahmed did not take the time to recognize any of the countless hours that his colleagues have spent.

I am disappointed to see how cynical and jaded Ahmed has become. He attacks current and future board members for “making promises” about affordable education and sustainability. No such promises were ever made, but board members and candidates have committed to working toward these goals.

It is sad to see that he thinks there is no point in keeping pressure on the government to address tuition costs, or working towards making UVic and the SUB more environmentally friendly. In fact, students lobbying and working hard year after year on these issues have made huge strides. Tuition is now capped at inflation, the university has taken up a Sustainability Action Plan and local mayors are creating a Late Night Transit Task Force all thanks in large parts to student pressure.

Other things that the UVSS has been active on this semester: bringing back the SUB Party, hosting Sue Johanssen’s Sex Talk show, having a soup kitchen to address rising student debt, open mic nights once a month, a packed and fun UVic Idol, Municipal and Provincial election forums and much more. Maybe it is Ahmed himself who “lacks imagination and creativity.” Right now, he has failed to be constructive as a student representative.

Finally, Ahmed argues that is time to end the controversies. While its true that UVSS has seen its fair share of debate and controversy, I can’t see how this is necessarily a bad thing. People need to take risks, have debate and learn from it. This is a university, after all. The fact that the UVSS is an open place for students to debate, discuss and often disagree is integral to it being a democratic body. I would not want to see it any other way.

It seems that its much easier to criticize and call your fellow board members names than actually work to find solutions. But either way, I doubt the name-calling is going to inspire any student to get involved or go out there and vote.

Bravo to Ahmed Mumeni for standing up to the UVSS Board of Directors and voicing his concerns! [Perspectives from a current board member Martlet, Mar 05, 2009].

Caitlin Meggs suggests that students should just get involved. This seems a little strange to me, in light of the Board of Director's recent attitude toward student involvement. The Martlet was absolutely correct when it pointed out in a recent Editorial that the UVSS doesn’t always appoint students to committees in a responsible manner.

And what about the recent Board decision to deny funding to YPY after the Clubs Council voted to give them funding? By refusing to respect the democratic process, the UVSS is only further alienating students who get involved.

Don't forget, it was essentially the same Board of Directors that also banned the Canadian Forces from the SUB. I don't see how that action encouraged debate or spurred student involvement.

I think it's clear that under the current Board of Directors, the UVSS is not an open place for students to debate, discuss, or disagree and it is questionable whether it is democratic. In fact, it is questionable whether Caitlin Meggs could possibly be talking about the same organization that has accomplished so little and alienated so many over the last few years. Perhaps she should have spent more time in her office.

Caitlin Meggs suggests that people need to take risks, have debate and learn from it. Why would anyone take the risk of trying to debate an issue with the UVSS Board when it is met with a snarky personal attack like this in the student newspaper? Caitlin Meggs has even gone as far as to kick people out of open committee meetings who disagree with her and try to have them banned from the SUB. I'm embarrassed that as a UVic student, I am forced to be associated with the UVSS.

Charlie - Kicking someone out of meetings and trying to ban them from the SUB? That sounds surreal and I'd be curious to know why the Martlet didn't cover that one or how often it happens if it does. I've heard rumours of people kicked out.

So here's one request to the board of next year - don't wait till election time to speak up if things aren't right. Ahmed did a great thing that's for sure and I'm guessing it was hard with so many opposing him and putting himself out in the open to such a petty personal attack. But it needed to happen sooner than election week.

If something isn't right then fight it - don't be complicit or let yourself be beat down. This upcoming year there can be no excuses. We have a plurality of people on the board and I have to believe that we can achieve better this year than we have in the past 3 at least as no single group has then numbers to bully another.

Charlie may be reffering to Lorenzo Bouchard. See http://martlet.ca/article/18299

If not, I'd be curious to know as well!

Caitlin Meggs has done a terrible job getting students involved in the last few years. How long are students going to let Team Fast ride on that stupid soup kitchen? Great. We give the UVSS millions of dollars every year and all we get is some lousy soup. The four executive members of the UVSS Board are paid a combined $100,000/year, and what do they have to show for it? They haven't lobbied the University for student interests, the SUB was closed for months due to a strike they caused, they've ignored resolutions from Clubs Council, they didn't do anything for Orientation in the Fall, and they got Vertigo's liquor license revoked. Not to mention the obvious issues of not appointing students to committees. Caitlin shouldn't be blaming Ahmed for students not caring about the UVSS, she should be blaming herself.

Ahmed would make a MUCh better chairperson than Meggs has ever been.
