UBC wins Spring cup
The Keg Spring Cup tournament wound up Sunday, March 28, at Centennial Stadium as the UBC Thunderbirds beat UVic 7-6 in a shootout, winning the match 2-1.
T-Birds goalkeeper Sharooz Rashidi was man of the match, playing astoundingly down the stretch. Rashidi had six saves, two in the shootout, to stave off a spirited Vikes comeback attempt.
In what amounted to a battle of keepers, Vikes backstop Dan Kilpatrick also put on a show, making 12 stops in the game. It took a 78th-minute goal by William Gye for the Vikes to force overtime.
The Vikes cranked up their offence at the end of the game, and when an Andrew Ravenhill cross found Gye, momentum became results for Bruce Wilson’s squad.
UBC built their lead on dominance in the opening frame, controlling play before Marco Visintin found Ryan Reynolds in the 38th minute to open the scoring.
In the tournament’s consolation game, defending CIS bronze medalists Trinity Western trounced Fraser Valley 7-2.
Forward Danfi Parker had a hat trick, all part of a five-goal second half for the Spartans. All of Parker’s goals came within a 22-minute span.
The tournament opened with a 3-1 Vikes win over Fraser Valley.
UVic was all over the Cascades early, as CIS All-Canadian Cole Macfarlane netted a goal in just the fifth minute of the game.
A goal by fourth-year Argentinian Miguel Romero continued the Vikes’ onslaught in the 21st minute while leading scorer Jordie Oberg scored the third goal early in the second half.
