Sports briefs

Soccer

The Vikes Women’s team lost 1–0 in a nail-biter against rivals UBC, Saturday afternoon at Centennial Stadium. The game remained scoreless until the last few minutes, when UBC’s Anja Sigloch finally scored the only goal of the match. With that loss, and Thursday’s 7–0 victory over the University of Regina Cougars, the Vikes now stand at 5–2–1. Their next game is Saturday against Trinity Western University.

This past Saturday, the Vikes Men’s team hammered UBC 3–2. Sean Battistoni, Greg Sawers, and Will Moore scored goals. Saturday’s win puts the Vikes record to 4–3. Their next match is Saturday vs. Trinity Western at Centennial Stadium.


Field Hockey

The Vikes Women’s team went 3–0–1 this past weekend at the Canada West (CW) Tournament #2 in Edmonton. They opened the tournament Friday with a 2–1 victory over the University of Alberta Pandas. Saturday morning they tied the Calgary Dinos 2–2 and then they toppled the Manitoba Bison 9–0. The shutout went to goaltender Gillian Batey.

At Sunday’s final they defeated long-time rival UBC 2–1. Currently, UVic sits in the second place, behind UBC, in the CW with 5–1–2.

Next weekend they will compete in the third CW tournament. The top two teams will earn a berth to this year’s CIS nationals.


Volleyball

The Vikes Women’s team went undefeated this past weekend at the UVic Invitational. Final Scores were 3–1 (Paradise Cove), 3–2 (High Tide) and 3–1 (Camosun College). Earlier that week, the Women lost 3–1 to five-time defending BCCAA provincial champions, Malaspina College.


Rugby

This past Saturday, the Men’s Rugby team defeated the Brittania Lions 51–29. Mike Danskin was the outstanding player with 21 points.


Basketball

Both the Vikes Men’s and Women’s team took to the court for preseason action against UVic alumni teams on Saturday at McKinnon Gym. Defending CIS champs, the women easily overcame their competitors 77–64. The men had a tougher time but still managed to squeak out a 9 point win 78–69. Regular season action begins Nov. 7 when the Vikes take on the UBC Thunderbirds.


Tiger Baiting

Roy Horn, known simply as “Roy” of Siegfried and Roy by magic enthusiasts, was seriously hurt this week in a freak mauling. The athlete/performer has been reported as being in “grave” condition by Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman.
