Here's a sneak peek of our new distribution boxes, Here's a sneak peek of our new distribution boxes, built with our partners at @cinecentafilms and @nexusnewspaper ! Last night, city council was scheduled to debate a motion that asked all newspaper boxes be removed from Victoria's streets. During COVID-19, these boxes were the only way we could distribute our paper. Some of you wrote letters in opposition to the original motion (thank you!!) and our Editor-in-Chief Kate Korte also wrote to council, detailing the processes we have in place to maintain our boxes. Before yesterday's council meeting, the motion was postponed until Sept 3. Kate spoke at the council meeting as well, and Mayor Lisa Helps said that the Martlet will be included in the dialogue going forward. We hope council considers our recommendation that they develop a registration system, rather than getting rid of boxes. With that, we will see what happens in September! Thank you to everyone that supported us this week!
Tomorrow, the Victoria City Council will debate a Tomorrow, the Victoria City Council will debate a motion regarding our newspaper boxes. We recieved just 1 complaint in the last year about a box that was in bad shape, and our Business Manager took the box back to our office within hours. The Martlet's Editor-in-Chief Kate Korte has requested to speak before council tomorrow and address this motion, requesting that the council permit a registration system for the boxes. Taelor Lay's term abroad in Northern Italy was int Taelor Lay's term abroad in Northern Italy was interrupted by the pandemic, as the city she was quickly growing to love shut down. But Lay stayed in Italy, and plans to run a solo marathon to raise money for two local organizations. On July 1, the legislature lawn normally used for On July 1, the legislature lawn normally used for a Canada Day concert was instead filled with a Black and Indigenous-led celebration called Resist Canada 153. The celebration sought to pay tribute to the ongoing resistance against the Canadian state and its ongoing legacy of colonialism and white supremacy.   At its peak, over 350 people gathered on the legislative grounds. At various points throughout the day, the group was provoked by a far-right and anti-mask protest on the other side of the lawn. Organizer Kati George-Jim, who is Indigenous and hails from the T'Sou-ke and W̱SIḴEM (Tseycum) territories, said that Resist Canada 153 was created “to celebrate Black and Indigenous relationship and our solidarity and our resistance against the attempt to exterminate who we are as human beings.”  Photo and story by @michaeljohnlo.

The tent camps at Topaz Park and Pandora Avenue we The tent camps at Topaz Park and Pandora Avenue were dismantled between May 20 and 24, in an effort by the B.C. government and the City of Victoria to reduce the spread of COVID-19. . Despite these intentions, encampment residents have voiced complaints about the process. Although they were promised housing, many residents are still without homes and without the community and services, they had in the camps. Residents also report that their tents and belongings have been destroyed or disposed of by the demolition company contracted by BC Housing to take apart the camps. .
