This is my last News Unsettled and my way of saying farewell. I joined the Native Students Union (NSU) three years ago. It was at the fall Semi-Annual General Meeting (SAGM) in 2019. I remember being so excited for the opportunity to be a part of the NSU.

Problems in the meetings with the Pope

On March 28, delegates from the Métis and Inuit people reached the Vatican City and met with Pope Francis in private meetings. The following week there were more audiences with the Pope with the Métis and Inuit, and there were also delegates from the Assembly of First Nations (AFN) meeting with the Pope.

The Western world’s reaction to war on Ukraine reveals deep hypocrisy

Before I write this, I want to clarify, I mean no disrespect to the Ukrainian people living in fear and who are suffering. What I hope to accomplish is to point out the hypocrisy of those who wail about the sufferings of white Ukrainians but are more than comfortable ignoring suffering that goes on around the world on a regular basis inflicted on people of colour (POC).

Take a moment of reflection before you speak

I have been in the Indigenous Studies (IS) program at UVic for over three and a half years. It is almost perfect. The faculty is amazing, the content is informative and powerful, but the other students often make it feel unsafe and painful to be in.

We need to keep our focus on Indigenous struggles

Although it is almost never in mainstream news anymore, the fight on Wet’suwet’en Yintah has never ended. It is still going. In early Jan. 2022, the Wet’suwet’en warned that the RCMP had begun to gather and prepare for another deployment against them. Despite this, the Wet’suwet’en are not being given the same spot in mainstream news anymore.

It is not our job to educate

Looking ahead to the new year, I think it is important for all Indigenous people to remember one thing: it is not our job to educate white people. As truth and reconciliation continues to become more and more of a trend, there is more pressure to educate the public.
