The University of Victoria’s Legacy Art Gallery

The University of Victoria’s Legacy Art Gallery opened a new exhibit On Beaded Ground for the summer. Showcasing intricate beadwork from 10 Indigenous artists living on the West Coast alongside historical beaded pieces, the collection shatters the understanding of the contemporary versus traditional art binary.

“It reflects the beaders’ connection to land, to animals, to dreams, to history, stories and it’s all relevant today,” said the collection’s head curator and UVic alumna Lorilee Wastasecoot. “We’re still here, we’re still flourishing and taking this beading to another level.”

TW - residential schools On June 1, UVic held a

TW - residential schools

On June 1, UVic held a somber ceremony and lit a sacred fire to honour the 215 Indigenous children found by Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc First Nation at the grounds of a former residential school.

The ceremony began with a land welcoming and prayers given by Garry Sam and Christine Sam from the Songhees Nation. Their remarks were followed with addresses from Ry Moran, the Associate University Librarian Reconciliation, and President Hall.

“Collective action is what’s necessary now to make sure that those kids at every single school are found and remembered and honoured,” said Moran, who worked with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada.

“We have to know this history, we have to remember them, we have to learn their names.”

For some members of Victoria’s unhoused communit

For some members of Victoria’s unhoused community, the long wait for a roof over their heads is almost over. With temporary housing units almost complete at Royal Athletic Park and Russell Street, BC Housing has begun offering spots to those sheltering in parks around the Capital Regional District (CRD). Those offered spaces at Russell Street began moving to their new temporary housing between May 3-5. The tiny houses at Royal Athletic Park will be ready in mid-May.

Despite the opening of new temporary housing spaces, challenges remain. Advocates in the community say the temporary spaces are no substitute for real homes. With the return of the bylaw prohibiting overnight camping in parks, bylaw officers have been directed to enforce restrictions against those who have refused offers of housing.
