UVic has closed applications for January intake du UVic has closed applications for January intake due to a high number of applicants. A typical fall term sees about 4 300 new students on campus each year, said Tony Eder, Executive Director of Academic Resource Planning at UVic. “As we emerge from COVID, we have an increase to about 4 800 new undergraduates,” said Eder in a statement to the Martlet. “Given our large fall intake, we’ve decided to limit the number of new students entering in January.” The January term usually only sees 700 to 800 new students. With a larger fall cohort and increased overall enrollments this year, UVic has decided to limit the January intake, said Eder. The museum accumulated a collection of thousands of remains of Indigenous people, along with cultural and historical items. In many instances, these items or remains were not taken with the consent of Indigenous peoples. This is a perfect event for anyone interested in learning from the people behind the headlines, and especially folks interested in the overdose crisis, housing crisis, and Indigenous stories. For our first IG Live, reporters Isabella and Alec will join Kate to discuss their roles. Alec will talk about some of the challenges with covering the overdose crisis and housing crisis in Victoria and Isabella will touch on how she approaches Indigenous stories.
“She’s calm…but she’s mighty,” said emer “She’s calm…but she’s mighty,” said emerging local artist Sarah Jim about the central woman figure in her new mural located in the University of Victoria’s Student Union Building (SUB). The Native Student Union (NSU) commissioned the piece to bring local W̱SÁNEĆ artistry to campus and to make the SUB basement a welcoming space for students. “Indigenous art pieces…act as a silent advocate for us. They take up space, sometimes tell a story, [and] show our values,” said the coordinator of the NSU Peter Underwood, who was involved in commissioning Jim for the piece. Of course, people may choose to continue to wear a mask. It is reccomended that anyone 12+ and not fully vaccinated continue to wear a mask. The university says this move is in line with new direction from the provincial health officer as B.C. moves into Stage 3 of the Restart Plan. #uvic #yyj
